Gerolimni

Gerolimni

A hidden paradise in Andros

Gerolimni lake on the river Achlas is perhaps one of the most beautiful places of Andros. It is located between the village of Vourkoti and the beach of Achla. It is a wonderful natural lake which is formed by the waters of the homonymous river, which springs from the northeastern peaks of Kouvara and flows into the Aegean Sea. The area is located within the Special Protection Zone of Andros, which is part of the European Natura 2000 network sites. The river has a permanent flow throughout the year.

Location-Access

Access to Gerolimni is difficult and inaccessible and is through Hiking Trail 6. Some points of the route have a particularly high index of difficulty (climbing rocks and crossing narrow points through the river). That's why good organization and equipment is required. If you follow the route from the Monastery of Saint Nicholas through the river Achla, you will find a beautiful route, through dense vegetation, small waterfalls that form natural lakes as well as the wonderful arched bridge of Achlas. The waterfall of Gerolimni in Vourkoti is a "treasure" of natural beauty in Andros and a visit to it can be a thrilling experience. Especially during the summer months, you can cool off in the icy waters of the lake immediately after your hike with the waterfall in the background.
