Pyrgos Beach

Pyrgos Beach

Pyrgos is one of the most hard to reach beaches of Andros, but also one of the most majestic ones. It’s small in length, with a golden, sandy shore and perfectly clean waters; ideal for snorkeling and fishing. It's a cove, so it’s fairly protected by meltemia.

Location & How to get there

Pyrgos beach is located on the northern west part of the islands, in close proximity to Kaminaki and Vlychada beach. The route there consists of a dirt road for its better part. It’s at a 14 km distance from Gavrio Port, 23 km from Batsi, 46 km from Chora and 50 km from Korthi.

History

The beach was named after the Tower (Pyrgos in Greek) of Ostodosia or the Castle of Makrotantalo, located on the northern western part of it. Makrotantalo is the smallest out of the three popular venetian castles of Andros and has many common elements with the renowned Lower Kastro of Chora. In the 13th century, Marinos Dandolos (also known as Tandalos), the venetian commander of the island, gifted the whole region, along with its castle, to his brother Marcus. The Castle was then named Makrotantalo, after Marcus Talandos.
